Risk of Rain Returns revisits the original 2D roguelike shooter, dropping players onto hostile alien worlds where a rising difficulty timer forces constant forward momentum. Random item drops stack together to build increasingly powerful characters over the course of a run.

Cooperative play lets multiple players tackle the same escalating threats together, sharing item pickups and dividing enemy attention. Permadeath keeps runs tense, while unlockable characters give reasons to keep starting over.
